Insects

2019

Excerpt from EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME:

This series of sculptures is inspired by insects that are extinct or in danger of disappearing. The titles refer to the Latin names of the species. The sculptures are monuments to the small and often overlooked species around us. Some are hybrids of human and insect bodies, highlighting our interdependency – while others take the form of commodities: the shoes with wings refer to gods such as Hermes/Mercury. In our culture, humans tend to have a complex relationship with the natural world that surrounds us, sometimes mistaking ourselves for gods and believing we are superior to other species. – Hannah Toticki
